When US President Trump meets with Russian President Putin on Friday, the discussion will revolve around what Russian considers the "core issues" that led to the 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
I'm anxious to hear the counter-arguments to what I firmly believe: the US/NATO crossed a line that the Russian people, and their current leadership, will not tolerate. That line was clearly defined, it was fully communicated ... and the US/NATO could have avoided this war. The only way Russia could have avoided war, to protect the citizens in the breakaway provinces, was to capitulate. To be shamed by their own weakness.
Russia was provoked beyond its limit. And Russia made it very clear where the limit was. Ukraine was not going to be allowed to join NATO to host short-range tactical missiles (targeting Russia's early warning radar systems) on Russia's very border.
In my opinion, it was really a stupid move to believe that the Russian people would not consider this a challenge to their national sovereignty, and support their leaders in resisting it with all they have ... to the very bitter end.
Russia's "red line" was ignored, and now the US/NATO is paying a heavy price for that choice. In my opinion, they just lost the first war that they've chosen to fight against Russia and its allies.
From the very inception of their country, Americans have always found their way back to the 250-year old battle cry from American imperialists: Give us what we want, or prepare to fight to defend it!
And countries around the world are being given a very simple choice. Not a pleasant one, but historical precedent makes it a simple one.
