The name Maskepetoon is a Cree term meaning "Broken Arm" or "Wounded Arm". The name originates from the story of the Cree leader Maskepetoon, who was found as a boy with a broken arm and was given this name because of that injury[1][2][3]. In certain accounts, the name has also been interpreted as "Crooked Arm," due to the way his arm had healed after being injured[4].
Maskepetoon later became known as a respected Cree chief, noted for his peacemaking efforts and leadership among the Plains Cree[5][6].
