Anaerobic digestion involves several biochemical stages (hydrolysis, acidogenesis, acetogenesis, methanogenesis), leading to reduced organic compounds, some of which are responsible for the dark color and smell due to the presence of substances like hydrogen sulfide and complex organic acids.[1][2][3]
This black gue typically contains:
- Partially decomposed plant fragments
- Microbial biomass
- Organic acids, ammonia, and mineral nutrients
- Sulfides, phenolics, and other reduced compounds (giving it a dark color and foul odor)
- Methane and carbon dioxide may be released as gases during the process.[2][1]
Such deposits are a natural outcome of decomposition in wetlands, marshes, anaerobic digesters, or any buried, water-logged plant debris, and are similar to “black mud” or “marsh muck” found in low-oxygen water bodies.
