Cavvy Energy's Caroline Carbon Capture Power Complex: Current Status
The Caroline Carbon Capture Power Complex — once described as what would be Canada's largest CCS project — has effectively been shelved as a standalone CCS initiative, a casualty of Cavvy Energy's (formerly Pieridae Energy) dramatic strategic pivot away from LNG and toward a focused upstream/midstream natural gas business in western Canada.
Origin of the Project
The complex was announced in May 2021 by Pieridae Energy (the predecessor company) as an ambitious integrated CCS and "blue power" facility at its Caroline gas plant in central Alberta. The original vision was grand:[1][2]
- Sequester up to 3 million tonnes of CO₂ per year into depleted underground reservoirs at the Caroline facility[3]
- Produce 1.9 billion kWh of blue power annually in Phase 1, scaling to 7.9 billion kWh at full build-out[1]
- Capture CO₂ from three sources: the gas processing facility, power generation, and external emitters[4]
- Sequester up to 100 million tonnes of CO₂ over 30+ years, equivalent to taking 650,000 cars off the road annually[2]
The project was directly tied to Pieridae's proposed Goldboro LNG export terminal in Nova Scotia — the CCS complex would offset Goldboro's emissions to satisfy European LNG buyers demanding carbon-neutral credentials.[5][6]
Why the CCS Project Stalled
The CCS complex was never able to reach a Final Investment Decision (FID). Several factors converged:
- Goldboro LNG collapsed. The $10-billion Goldboro LNG terminal — the primary raison d'être for the CCS complex — failed to reach FID in June 2021 as planned, was repeatedly delayed, and was ultimately shelved in July 2024 when Pieridae sold those Nova Scotia assets.[7][8]
- Strategic pivot away from LNG. Beginning in 2023, under CEO Darcy Reding, Pieridae's leadership announced a deliberate pivot to focus exclusively on western Canadian upstream and midstream operations, explicitly stepping away from east-coast LNG.[7]
- Rebrand to Cavvy Energy. In May 2025, shareholders approved the company's name change from Pieridae Energy to Cavvy Energy Ltd. (TSX: CVVY), cementing the new identity as a Foothills-focused gas processor and producer.[7]
What Cavvy Energy Is Actually Doing Now at Caroline
Rather than CCS, the Caroline gas plant has become the centrepiece of Cavvy's third-party processing growth strategy. As of Q4 2025, roughly 65% of Cavvy's total third-party processing volumes were handled at Caroline. Key highlights:[9]
- The plant has a licensed capacity of 195 MMcf/d at approximately 55% utilization, leaving significant headroom for growth[10]
- Third-party raw gas volumes have grown at approximately 76% CAGR since H2 2023, driven by liquids-rich Mannville Glauconitic and Ellerslie drilling activity in the capture area[11]
- Record third-party processing hit 136.1 MMcf/d in Q3 2025[12]
- Cavvy recently signed a multi-year take-or-pay agreement with an anchor processing customer at Caroline[12]
- A major 6-week maintenance turnaround at Caroline is scheduled for Q3 2026, with $15–20 million budgeted[12]
2025 Financial Results & 2026 Outlook
Cavvy's Q4 2025 and full-year results released in March 2026 showed strong operational execution:[13]
- Full-year 2025 production: 23,904 boe/d (80% natural gas)
- Net Operating Income: $110.5 million for full-year 2025
- Third-party processing revenues grew 92% year-over-year to $38.8 million
- 2P reserves rose 7% to 260.5 MMboe, with 2P PV10 of $1,505.9 million (+20%)
- During Q1 2026, Cavvy repaid US$27 million of long-term debt, leaving a senior term loan of US$55.3 million and subordinated loan of US$33.6 million[13]
For 2026, Cavvy is guiding for production of 22,000–24,500 boe/d and targeting aggressive debt reduction of up to $50 million, aiming for year-end debt of $110–125 million. The company achieved a one-year total shareholder return of approximately 333% as of December 2025.[12][14]
Is CCS Completely Dead at Caroline?
Not necessarily ruled out forever — but it is not on Cavvy's active agenda. The Global Energy Monitor still lists the Caroline Carbon Capture Power Complex as "announced" with a 200 MW gas unit under 100% Cavvy Energy ownership, with a planned start year of 2026. However, Cavvy's own investor presentations and earnings calls make no mention of CCS as an active project — the focus is entirely on processing throughput, debt reduction, and eventual "accretive growth opportunities" once leverage improves. When analysts asked about Caroline debottlenecking in the Q4 2025 call, COO John Emery confirmed there is no CCS capital in the 2026 guidance and that expansion paths were still being evaluated.[15][9][16]
In short: the Caroline Carbon Capture Power Complex remains a notable "what could have been" in Alberta's CCS landscape. The depleted reservoirs and infrastructure that made it attractive still exist, but Cavvy's strategic direction — and the broader economics of standalone CCS projects in Alberta — have kept it on ice indefinitely.[17]
