Who is responsible for maintaining Alberta's secondary highways? Local County or the Province?

Alberta's secondary highways are maintained by the Province of Alberta, not by local counties or municipalities. The Government of Alberta, through the Ministry of Transportation (often referred to as Alberta Transportation), is responsible for all provincial highways, including both primary and secondary highways. Maintenance work—such as snow removal, pothole repair, and signage—is delivered by private contractors hired by the province and managed through designated contract maintenance areas. Local counties are responsible solely for municipal (local) roads, which include township and range roads, but not numbered secondary highways.

For any issues or questions regarding a numbered secondary highway, contact the Alberta Transportation’s contracted highway maintenance provider for your region, not the local county.
