'White phosphorous used in Afghan war'
Leaked documents have revealed that US-led forces in Afghanistan have made extensive use of white phosphorus bombs in densely-populated areas.
A review of the Afghan military documents revealed more than 1,100 instances of US-led forces -- including Danish troops -- having used white phosphorus (WP) grenades, rockets and bombs, the Danish daily Information reported. According to one document, US-led forces fired 20 to 50 WP rockets at a single target. Many of the WP munitions have often been used in residential areas. White phosphorus is a substance that burns upon coming into contact with human flesh; it sticks to the skin and continues to burn as long as there is oxygen. The result is severe and possibly lethal chemical burns.
According to international conventions the use of white phosphorus is to be restricted exclusively to areas that are not densely populated. However, the leaked documents from Afghanistan indicate that the WP has been used as an attack weapon in populated areas, including zones where the Danish troops are deployed. The widespread use of white phosphorus by US-led forces has prompted concern among rights groups.
“White phosphorus must not be used against civilians or in areas inhabited by civilians,” said Peter Vedel Kessing, a senior researcher at Denmark's Department of Human Rights. Amnesty International has also called for an investigation into the use of the substance in Afghanistan.
“If talking about inhuman weapons makes any sense at all, white phosphorus certainly must belong to this category, since it leaves its victims in unimaginable pain,” Amnesty International spokesperson in Denmark Ole Hoff Lund said. “Therefore, it is important that the Danish military launches an inquiry into how and why” US-led forces have been using white phosphorus munitions, Lund added.
Military lawyer Rolf Verge at the Danish Army's Operational High Command (HOK) has confirmed that the Danish forces have been using white phosphorus, but he stressed that the WP is used only in a lawful manner.

Gaddafi is not about to give up
2011-05-14
The leader of the revolution who lives in the hearts of the millions, the place which cannot be reached by the crusaders, delivered an audio message broadcast by Libyan state TV on Friday evening.
The leader started his speech by conveying thanks to all president, ministries, ambassadors, officials and ordinary people who were concerned about the leaders health conditions, after hearing on the coward missile attack by the crusaders on the dawn of Thursday May 12.
" this coward missile aggression which resulted in the martyrdom of 3 Libyans, and to whose families I would like to say, don’t be sad; instead, be proud as consequently your sons immortally live in the eternal life".
" I would like to say to those coward crusaders, I live in a place you can't reach to kill me because I live in the hearts of the millions, and even if you managed to kill me physically, you can't kill my soul, which live in the hearts of the millions. Glory is ours, immortality is for the martyrs, and the shame and death are for the cowards and traitors," the leader said via his an audio message. Source here
Editor: Please note the referral to "crusaders" in the above article. This is a polarizing message that stirs up very old resentments in the Middle East. It means that we in the "new world' are getting sucked into a maelstrom of ancient hatreds.
Why would we do that?

LETTER TO PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA BY NOBEL PRIZE WINNER ADOLFO PEREZ ESQUIVEL, BUENOS AIRES, MAY 5, 2011:

NOBEL PRIZE WINNER ADOLFO PEREZ ESQUIVEL
FROM NOBEL TO NOBEL
Dear Barack,
In addressing you I do it fraternally and, at the same time, to express my concern and indignation after witnessing the destruction and death caused in several nations in the name of “freedom and democracy”, two words that have been twisted and stripped of meaning, and how you end up justifying murder, which was cheered up as if you were talking about a sports event.
My indignation refers to the big celebration of this assassination by North American social sectors, chiefs of state in Europe and other countries…a murder ordered by your administration and the satisfaction in your smiling face while stating that it was “in the name of justice”.
You didn’t intend to seize and judge him for his alleged crimes, which makes us believe that your real intent was to assassinate him.
The dead are mute and fearing that Bin Laden could disclose compromising facts for the USA, you decided to kill him, ensuring his permanent silence, unaware that by doing this you have reinforced our suspicions.
When you were granted the Nobel Prize I sent you a letter which read: “Barack, I am astounded by your having been presented with the Nobel Prize, but now that you have it you must use to promote peace among nations; you have all the possibilities to do it…to end the wars and begin correcting the severe crisis in your own country and the world”.
Unfortunately, you have increased hatred and betrayed the principles you assumed during your electoral campaign, such as ending the invasions in Afghanistan and Iraq; closing the prisons in Guantanamo and Abu Graib, but you haven’t done it, quite to the contrary, you decided to start another war in Libya, backed up by NATO and the shameful resolution by UNO to support you, when this organization, diminished and weak, has lost its path and has been subjugated to the whims and interests of the dominant powers. Inflation rises at fastest rate since Oct. 2008
Inflation accelerated to its fastest annual pace in two and a half years in April, as surging gas prices continued to hit American consumers.
The Consumer Price Index, the government's key inflation measure, rose 3.2% over the last 12 months that ended April 30, according to Friday's report from the Labor Department. It was the biggest 12-month jump since October 2008. More than half of the increase was due to rising energy prices, the government said. Gas prices alone surged 3.3% in April, and are up 33.1% over the past year. CNN

NATO airstrikes kill 16 civilians in Libya
NATO warplanes have dropped bombs on a civilian center in the key Libyan city of Brega, killing at least 16 people and wounding 40 others.
Editor: The conflict in Libya will likely be a protracted one, not unlike Afghanistan, because of the tribal nature of Libyan society with long established loyalty relationships. Canada is now involved in an illegal and immoral war in that country, engineered by vested interest groups with links to the North American Oligarchy.
Libyan state television announced on Friday that the air raid targeted a guest house in the city. Residents say most of the victims were Muslim clerics who had gathered there for a religious ceremony.
"They were a group of Muslim sheikhs (religious leaders) were holding a religious ceremony in the area of a Brega," witnesses said. Medics say the death toll is expected to rise as some of the seriously injured are said to be in critical condition.
NATO has not confirmed the report yet. Brega is reportedly controlled by forces loyal to longtime Libyan ruler Muammar Gaddafi. Many civilians have reportedly been killed since the Western-led war on Libya began last month. This comes after the UN mandated the alliance to enforce a no-fly zone on Libya to protect civilian lives. NATO has already been under criticism from Libyan opposition forces for not doing enough to protect civilians.
The head of the opposition's armed forces Gen. Abdul Fattah Younis told reporters in Benghazi last month that NATO's inaction has allowed government troops to advance and kill people in Misratah and other cities. Younis has threatened to ask the United Nations Security Council to suspend the NATO mission in Libya if the military alliance does not do "its work properly." He also slammed Western-led forces over the civilian death toll caused by NATO's bombing campaign in the country.
Critics, however, accuse the West of hypocrisy over the offensive on Libya, along with its silence towards the brutal crackdowns on similar anti-regime movements elsewhere in the Arab world, such as in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Yemen.

News of Bin Laden's Death and Funeral 10 days ago
Islamabad
A prominent official in the Afghan Taleban movement announced yesterday the death of Osama bin Laden, the chief of al-Qa'da organization, stating that bin Laden suffered serious complications in the lungs and died a natural and quiet death. The official, who asked to remain anonymous, stated to The Observer of Pakistan that he had himself attended the funeral of bin Laden and saw his face prior to burial in Tora Bora 10 days ago. He mentioned that 30 of al-Qa'da fighters attended the burial as well as members of his family and some friends from the Taleban. In the farewell ceremony to his final rest guns were fired in the air.
The official stated that it is difficult to pinpoint the burial location of bin Laden because according to the Wahhabi tradition no mark is left by the grave. He stressed that it is unlikely that the American forces would ever uncover any traces of bin Laden. Article posted here

A Story from the Tornado Zone
Storm clouds approach Huntsville, Alabama, on April 27th. Photo credit: Nancy Vreuls of NASA/MSFC
Editor's Note:On Wednesday, April 27th, Science@NASA writer Dauna Coulter found herself near ground zero as a super-outbreak of tornadoes ripped through North Alabama. This is the story about the science of the event she wrote and submitted from within the disaster zone.
April 27, 2011: Tornado sirens wailed all day long. They'd sound off and then wind down for a little while, only to start up again a few minutes later as forecasters spotted yet another hook echo on their radars and adrenaline-revved storm spotters confirmed the twisters that dropped from seething skies one after another.
We lined our bathroom closet with blankets and pillows for my grandson. My husband kept going outside to look at the sky. If an atmosphere can become sentient, the one out there was a malevolent, living thing. This was not your usual storm. Even our Golden Retriever was pacing the floor. Story here

Clinton seeks to use Gaddafi’s seized funds to aid Libyan people
By Mary Beth Sheridan, Published in Washington Post: May 4 | Updated: Thursday, May 5, 6:53 AM
ROME — The Obama administration intends to use some of the billions of dollars in frozen assets belonging to Libyan leader Moammar Gaddafi and his government to provide humanitarian and other assistance to Libyans affected by the ongoing civil war, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said Thursday.
The move, announced at a high-level meeting here on how to shore up Libya’s bedraggled rebels, appeared to be the first time a country has sought to tap some of the massive Libyan wealth blocked by U.N. sanctions in February.
Clinton, speaking with leaders from NATO and Arab countries, said the Obama administration would seek congressional approval to allocate the frozen funds — a standard legal procedure under U.S. law. She did not say how much money was involved, or whether it would go to the rebels battling Gaddafi’s forces or to international humanitarian organizations. Article here

SYRIA: Who is Behind The Protest Movement? Fabricating a Pretext for a US-NATO "Humanitarian Intervention"
by Prof. Michel Chossudovsky
There is evidence of gross media manipulation and falsification from the outset of the protest movement in southern Syria on March 17th.
The Western media has presented the events in Syria as part of the broader Arab pro-democracy protest movement, spreading spontaneously from Tunisia, to Egypt, and from Libya to Syria.
Media coverage has focussed on the Syrian police and armed forces, which are accused of indiscriminately shooting and killing unarmed "pro-democracy" demonstrators. While these police shootings did indeed occur, what the media failed to mention is that among the demonstrators there were armed gunmen as well as snipers who were shooting at both the security forces and the protesters. NASA Announces Results of Epic Space-Time Experiment
May 4, 2011: Einstein was right again. There is a space-time vortex around Earth, and its shape precisely matches the predictions of Einstein's theory of gravity.
Researchers confirmed these points at a press conference today at NASA headquarters where they announced the long-awaited results of Gravity Probe B (GP-B).
"The space-time around Earth appears to be distorted just as general relativity predicts," says Stanford University physicist Francis Everitt, principal investigator of the Gravity Probe B mission. Article published here
Alberta Government in trouble
Editor: This editorial was published in the Rocky View Weekly in Alberta on April 29.

Editorial: PCs have chosen a hill to die on
Apr 29, 2011
Often times it’s not what you choose to support that comes to define you, it’s what you choose to oppose. In its white-knuckle embrace of controversial bills 19, 36, and 50, the Progressive Conservative party has chosen its hill to die on.
Bill 50 - The Electric Statutes Amendment Act, Bill 19 - The Land Assemble Project Act and Bill 36 - The Alberta Land Stewardship Act have been largely rejected by a rural populace unwilling to have their property rights eroded and stripped away. The government had a chance, this spring, to gauge public opinion. It had a chance to ease rural fears, admit a mistake and make amends. The government half-heartedly attempted to do this with Bill 10. However, in using selective language meant to muddy the waters and confuse the public, the bill fell short. It was lipstick on a pig, and didn’t fool anyone.
This time, rather than admit defeat and go back to the drawing board, the government chose the worst possible time to grow a spine.
This government, which has caved into multiple unions’ demands for outrageous wage increases in the midst of a global recession, which has chosen deficits over spending control, decided to pick a fight with rural Alberta. The government invoked closure to halt debate on Bill 10 and ram the legislation through.
In short, the government that has tried to be all things to all people has finally chosen something to oppose - and it’s you. A provincial general election is not far away. The PC party may hold onto some urban seats, for now. The PCs may even hold on to government, for now.
But, in choosing this hill to die on, the PC party looks to have sealed its demise in rural Alberta.

Osama bin Laden is Dead (2007). Does he have more than one life?
Editor: David Frost interviews Benazir Bhutto on November 2, 2007 prior to her assassination on December 27 of that year . Approximately 7 minutes into the interview she mentioned that Osama bin Laden was assassinated, as a matter of fact. And being very well connected, she should know. So the question arises:
Was Osama "re-assassinated" in order to boost Obama's flagging public image? And, why was "Osama" suddenly buried at sea? What a scam!
